“Stand...

‘Wyrd Beautiful Thyme’ by Band Of Holy Joy

“Stand and watch lives disappear / Are these the days to be austere?”
Spring brings rebirth and with it the possibility of hope… May Day sees the emergence of Band of Holy Joy’s first new songs since their How to Kill a Butterfly album was released to universal acclaim at the close of 2011 (including album of the year at Beat Surrender)! And whilst that album moved through some dark places, Wyrd Beautiful Thyme finds love and life in chaos embracing the pockets of joy that can still be found even as the world spirals into hell. This beautifully illustrated 7” (their first since 1992) finds Johny and the band in ebullient mind and body – the title track is energised and gleeful with loose percussion, fuzzy synth, woody wah wah and enchanting backing vocals whilst the flip, ‘A Clean White Shirt’, is reflective and triumphant as they emerge sweetly out of “a terminally bad existence” and away from the mire. ‘Wyrd Beautiful Thyme’ sees Band of Holy Joy continue to burn a path brighter than at any other time since they first formed.

‘How to Kill a Butterfly‘ is still very much in rotation having received a full retail release on April 2nd.

21st to 26th November 2011, 10am to...

Abbey Road and Other Stories

21st to 26th November 2011, 10am to 7pm (Monday to Friday, until 4pm on Saturday)
The Gallery, London College Of Communication
Elephant and Castle
London
SE1 6SB

Featuring works by: Richard Coles / Andrew Davidson / Andrew Espin / Geoff Howse / Jack James / Ariel Karsh / Kiki / Charlie Kerr / Dario Khan / Kevin Logan / Giuseppe Scalese / Giulia Scarantino / Tadeo Sendon / Tom Soloveitzik / James Stephen Finn

Private View: Tuesday 22 November, 6 – 9pm
Symposium: Saturday 26 November, 11 – 4pm
RSVP: events@lcc.arts.ac.uk

Presenting new works by fifteen sound artists, Abbey Road and Other Stories offers an in-depth enquiry into the languages and systems of sound in the arts.

Taking the title from James Stephen Finn’s installation ‘How Abbey Road Destroyed Rock and Roll’, which itself emulates the title of Elijah Wald’s revisionist music history How the Beatles Destroyed Rock ‘n’ Roll, the exhibition reveals alternative strategies of listening to and interacting with sound.

Kiki, Espin and Khan approach the capacity of sound for evoking and performing places, their stories and histories, whilst the performative works of Logan, Scarantino, Howse and James explore sound as an activator whether of spaces and objects or the narratives of politics and people.

Dealing with the systems of sound and the evaluation of their mechanisms Coles, Kerr, Davidson and Sendon take us into the machine, pushing sound equipment to interesting extremes or playing with the languages and virtual manifestations of technology.

New works by Soloveitzik and Scalese document and play with ideas of subjective and aesthetic values, whilst Karsh invokes a character from the devoted extremes of sound and its manipulation, a heavy metal sound mixer born from the machines and myths of music.

To coincide with the exhibition CRiSAP’s (Centre for Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice) will be hosting a symposium at London College of Communication on the relationship between sound arts practice and sound research with Dr. Ximena Alarcon, Dr. Nye Parry and Dr. Alice Eldridge and chaired by CRiSAP’s director Angus Carlyle. The symposium is free however booking is required. Please RSVP to: events@lcc.arts.ac.uk

Abbey Road and Other Stories is curated by Mark Jackson and Morgan Quaintance and supported by London College of Communication and CRiSAP. The exhibition presents the final work of the MA Sound Arts graduates of London College of Communication.

Tramadol Nights
